Almost Salinas was filmed exclusively on location in Central California. A 1950s diner and gas station were constructed for the film in Bitterwater Valley, 42 miles east of Paso Robles, a crossroads that doubled for the remote town of Cholame where actor James Dean met his untimely death. At the end of each day just before sunset, a herd of cows belonging to the local rancher whose land we were on, came out of the hills to graze in the pastures below.
